The Delhi High Court on January 20 refused to further extend the interim bail granted to expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar on medical grounds in the Unnao rape cases, PTI reported. The politician, who was directed to surrender on January 20, failed to secure the relief from a division bench in the main rape case, after it was noted that his application seeking extension was not supplied to the survivor.

"Take him into custody. This application has not been served," PTI quoted a bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur. The counsel for the rape survivor alleged that he was only given an application seeking an "early hearing".

The Delhi High Court had on December 3 granted interim bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

Subsequently, in the case pertaining to the custodial death of the survivor's father, Justice Vikas Mahajan observed that in view of the stand taken by the division bench, extending the interim relief in this case would serve no purpose. "If the division bench has refused,PHL63 it would not serve any purpose. You surrender," the judge said.

In December 2019, Sengar was sentenced to life for raping a woman in 2017. She was a minor when assaulted. Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brother Jaideep Singh Sengar, were also sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment for the killing of the woman’s father in judicial custody in March 2020.

The Unnao rape survivor was allegedly kidnapped and raped by Sengar between June 11 and June 20, 2017. She was then sold for Rs 60,000, after which she was rescued from the Makhia police station.

Following this, the survivor was allegedly threatened by police officers who warned her against speaking out.

The woman and her family have been provided security after a Supreme Court order in July 2019. The court had noted at the time that there was a threat to the lives of the survivor, her mother and her lawyer, among other persons.

This was after a truck without a license plate collided with the survivor’s car. The girl and her lawyer were severely injured, while her two aunts were killed.
